German Weather Talk: Small Talk Fuel and 50 Nature Words
Weather talk (das Wetter) is Germany's default small talk opener, with rich precise vocabulary: Es zieht sich zu (clouds closing in), das Gewitter raut ab (storm clearing). Four seasons (der Frühling, Sommer, Herbst, Winter) anchor nature vocabulary — der Wald, die Wiese, der Bach — while forecast language uses impersonal es-constructions throughout: Es wird sonnig, es bleibt bewölkt.
Ask a German about the weather and you'll get a meteorologically informed paragraph. Weather talk is the national small talk currency — and its vocabulary is beautifully systematic.
Impersonal es-constructions do most of the work, which means no case gymnastics: pure vocabulary acquisition.

Forecast comprehension drill
Watch Tagesschau weather (or wetter.de) once daily for a week. Forecast German repeats relentlessly: morgen, im Laufe des Tages, am Nachmittag, örtlich, vereinzelt, bis zu... Grad. Seven days of exposure yields near-complete forecast comprehension.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Germans talk about weather so much?
It's safe common ground — no politics, no privacy, universal experience. Also genuinely variable weather gives daily novelty. Treat it as the conversational handshake it is.
Why 'Es sind 15 Grad' and not 'ist'?
Temperatures grammatically behave like plurals in this construction — historical convention. Es IST warm works for general warmth, but numeric readings take sind.
Is schwül the same as feucht?
No — feucht is neutral humidity; schwül specifically means unpleasantly muggy (humid + warm). Germans complain about schwül weather constantly in summer.
Do regions differ in weather vocabulary?
Yes: Alpine regions have dozens of snow-state words; northern coast talks Wind and Watt (tidal flats); Swabia complains differently. Standard forecast German works everywhere though.
