Konjunktiv II expresses the unreal and the polite: wishes (Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee), hypotheticals (Wenn ich Zeit hätte, käme ich), advice (Du solltest schlafen), and softeners (Könnten Sie mir helfen?). The regular form is würde + infinitive; the one-word forms — wäre, hätte, könnte, sollte, müsste, dürfte, wüsste — sound more native and appear everywhere in speech.
English leans on 'would' for everything unreal. German splits the job: würde handles ordinary verbs, but a small family of one-word subjunctives — wäre, hätte, könnte — does the heavy lifting in real conversation.

Both halves take Konjunktiv II — this differs from English's 'if I had... I would'.
